Vault 5 is a Vault-Tec Corporation Vault located in Los Angeles, California.
Background[]
In the Vault-Tec database included in Vault 18's central server AI Maria, Vault 5 was mentioned to be located in Los Angeles, California, more specifically within the resort town of Marina Del Rey. Its inhabitants were all pre-War counterculture musicians and fans who had previously been incarcerated. The Vault's experiment focused on the impact of constant high-decibel rock music on human beings. This resulted in the residents gradually going insane, even resorting to cannibalism, but surviving. They eventually emerged from the Vault some time before 2260 and adopted the new identity of the Pirate Raider Legion of Terror Max, bringing the Vault's music into their tradition and using it on their radio station DETH981.[1]
Notes[]
The description of rock music as banned by the government does not concur with later depictions of the genre in the Fallout series, with rock concerts even said to still be occurring in late 2077, just before the Great War.[2] Note that this is likely an oversight due to New California being developed largely before the release of later main series entries Fallout 4 and Fallout 76.
Appearances[]
Vault 5 is mentioned only in Fallout: New California.
