Shawn Star is a resident of Vault 18 and a member of the Star Player's family in Fallout: New California.

Background[]

Shawn Star is the brother of Mandy Star and the Star Player, and the half-brother of Jason Star-Christianson. Along with Mandy and the Star Player, he was born of the Father's experiments with Project Brazil, implanted into a tribal mother - Orrika. They were cast out and raised among the Exodite tribes in the wastes, until the Father had his mutants raze the tribal settlements and capture their inhabitants for FEV testing. Shawn, like his siblings and several other orphans, survived thanks to Annai Oran, who hid them.

They were later discovered by Dale Norman and the Wasteland Scouts, who came across the settlement's ruins and rescued them, petitioning Overseer Albert Christianson to have Vault 18 adopt them. This was accepted, and Shawn and his siblings were raised by the Overseer and his wife (though only Jason was officially adopted.)[1]

Raised in the vault, Shawn became a quick student of Dr. Rossman, showing an affinity for robotics and technology. He is a regular player of role-playing games, first seen playing a game with Jason. After Rossman gave up on studying the ALPHA droid they recovered, Shawn reused its hard drive to house his own text adventure game which he had written, called Cybershock Alpha! - which, upon completion, could be turned off to redirect power to ALPHA's core systems.

On November 23, 2260, Shawn, Mandy, and Jason choose to skip watching the climactic Vault Ball game their sibling is participating in and instead stay in their apartment to play the RPG Robots 2500!.

Events of Act One[]

He, Mandy, and the Star Player are all killed in their apartment when the Enclave Patriots detonate explosives in the transformers above the Lower Apartments, causing partial cave-ins. The Star Player, thanks to their one-in-a-million functioning version of Project Brazil, is able to revive; however, Shawn and Mandy, given defective versions, are killed instantly.

Interactions with the Player Character[]

Prequel[]

Shawn can be encountered in the Star family apartment in the Lower Apartments, greeting the Star Player upon their return and accidentally letting slip that the player' siblings missed the big game. He can be optionally spoken to to confront him about missing the game or forgive him for doing so, as well as give background on the game he is playing. On the Path of the Scientist, a dialogue choice with Nerd Super Star will lead him to be slightly more apologetic.

Notes[]

During a conversation with Mandy, if the player has the trait Wild Wasteland, Shawn will note that "despite New Vegas being about gambling, the guys at Bethesda/Obsidian never added a dice-rolling animation for NPCs."
