Detailed Walkthrough[]
Save the Vault! is started after finishing the quest The Calm Before the Storm.... The Star Player will be woken up by an explosion which knocks them out of their bed. After regaining controls, they will find that their apartment has been destroyed and partially caved in, and that Mandy and Shawn Star are dead (as well as Eric and/or Jamie Campbell depending on choices made during the prequel.) The unique weapon The Plummer can be found here, as well as the unique Vault-Tec Vault Ball gear apparel set.
Immediately upon exiting, Vault 18 Security officers Mark and Bob will be found defending against the rebelling Enclave Patriots in the form of an attack by Kalin Day and Jimmy Gingerly, though both sides are currently neutral to the player character. One can choose to optionally help either side or simply run past. Note that if one intends to join the Enclave, it is necessary to not fight the Patriots here in order to stay neutral.
If one chooses to help the officers, or if they win the fight without help, speak to Officer Mark for information on the situation, and the quest will now start as Mark tells the Star Player to regroup with Sgt. Norman in the Upper Apartments. Earnest Schwartz, who is cowering nearby, can optionally be recruited as a temporary follower with Strength 6+. Jenn Hail can also be found nearby in the destroyed Hail apartment, but will only follow the Star Player if they are an Athlete, and also will not engage in combat. The body of Joe Marshall is nearby, and carries the key to the Pipeworks.
Atrium[]
On approaching the exit to the Atrium, Terra Mayson will attempt to confront the player character. She will force dialogue unless the player character is already hostile to the Patriots, in which case she will immediately start attacking. To join the Enclave as an Athlete, Terra can be convinced to lead the Star Player to John Bragg by having completed the quest I've Got A Feeling... and learning about the master list, or with the perk Born Soldier II, a Perception 7 check, or a Charisma 7 check. As a Nerd, she can only be convinced with the perk Vault Tech 2. Otherwise, she must be fought, though she can be talked down with a Charisma 8 check or alternatively scared away with an Endurance 7 check (though this still turns her hostile.)
In the Atrium, there are two ways to reach the Upper Apartments. First, it can be directly reached by taking an immediate left turn from the Lower Apartments exit. The other way to get there is by going through the Pipeworks. The closest hatch is found between the doors to the bathrooms, on the other side of the Upper Apartments entrance. There is also another hatch to the Pipeworks inside the (Enclave-controlled) Vault 18 Security hallway. The hatches are locked and require the Pipeworks key carried by Joe Marshall to be unlocked.
Note that being spotted wearing a Vault "Patriot" uniform by any security officer in the Atrium will cause the quest to fail and the officers to turn hostile, as they will mistake the Star Player for a Patriot. Entering the Upper Apartments while wearing the uniform will also immediately fail the quest.
Upper Apartments[]
Once in the Upper Apartments, speak to Eric Campbell (if applicable) and Sgt. Norman before fighting off three Patriots. After the fight ends, speak to Sgt. Norman again to be directed to Chief Evanson in the Hydroponics Lab. Norman will hand over the keys to the Lower Cistern and the Lab. Follow the flares on the ground through Dr. Rossman's apartment to reach the lab. If she did not die in the Lower Apartments, optionally speak to Jamie Campbell to recruit her and Eric as followers. Rossman's laser rifle can be found here.
After reaching the Hydroponics Lab, speak to Chief Evanson and help him through the quest Defeat The Enclave!. Afterwards, he will hand over the key to the Terrarium and ask the Star Player to check on the overseer. Enter the Terrarium and speak to Christianson to end the quest.
Notes[]
- If Officer Mark was ignored or killed, the quest can also be started upon speaking to Sgt. Norman in the Upper Apartments.
- If the Enclave was joined and Hell To Pay was started, it is possible to switch sides and join Vault Security by speaking to John "Diesel" Anderson before breaking into the overseer's office (but not after that point.) Anderson will lead the player character through the Pipeworks to the Upper Apartments, and Save the Vault! will update to that stage. Otherwise, the quest will be failed through Hell to Pay if it was already started.
