I-15 (or Interstate 15; occasionally called the Long 15) is a pre-War north-south interstate highway in the Pass.
Background[]
For information on I-15 in the Fallout series, see I-15 on Nukapedia.
Thanks to the Dune Sea's radioactive sands cutting off I-10 into Arizona, travel in the southeastern region of New California is almost impossible. Due to this, anyone seeking to head beyond New California is forced to resort to more northern routes to travel east to the Mojave and further regions. Interstate 15 is the most prominent of these routes, connecting Angel's Boneyard to the Hub and providing a quick method of travel for all prospective explorers and traders.
Due to its position in New California, a significant section of I-15 lies in the Pass, which has been disputed territory between the Survivalist Raiders and the NCR for several decades. As such, merchants and travelers have grown wary as tensions rise between the NCR and the steadily-growing Raider Alliance formed as a result of NCR efforts to clean up crime at home.
As of 2260, NCR interests have begun to turn their eye upon the Mojave, but the NCR still formally recognizes Raider sovereignty of the Pass. Thus, President Wendell Peterson brokered a treaty with the raiders to allow NCR troops and affiliated caravans to pass through the region unharmed - though others within NCR feared the raiders were simply setting a trap for any caravans brave enough to travel through the Pass.[1] They were proved right, as the raiders went on to ambush and massacre two companies of the NCR Army at the I-138 - I-15 beltway. While the exact outcomes of the Battle of I-15 are unknown due to the presence of the Star Player, the Raiders would succeed in pushing off NCR forces to take control of I-15, going on to even attack small supply caravans[2] and neutral travelers and traders.
Travel has been made even worse by a series of unfortunate natural events. Radioactive sand dunes in the north have shifted and covered up much of the route, while a rockslide in the south has blocked the interstate and greatly slowed travel, effectively preventing travel out of the Pass.[3] Radscorpions have also emerged from an unknown location, becoming a thorn in the side of caravans and travelers on I-15, while sand dunes in the south around San Bernardino have also contributed to increased radiation.[4]
By 2281, the Raider Alliance has relinquished its hold on the Pass and I-15 one way or another, allowing the NCR to take full control of I-15 from New California to the Mojave. It has thus dedicated its forces to policing I-15 in the hopes of making it a stable and safe supply and trading route.
Layout[]
The section of I-15 that runs through the Cajon Pass can be found in the middle-west of the Pass, going almost completely straight north. The southern reach of the interstate is blocked by the I-15 radioactive crater, where a bomb struck during the Great War and left a sizable impact, its shockwaves cutting off the overpass bridge south out of the Pass in the process. This area is still highly radioactive, with radiation of up to 79 rads/second. The wrecked sand crawler can be found along the highway slightly to the north of this area, and Triton's Rest can be found slightly north of the crawler. Further north, I-15 passes through the south dunes before intersecting with Interstate 138 at the I-138 - I-15 beltway. The I-15 Cajon Pass bridge then traverses the southern half of the Cajon Playa and passes the Cajon Bluff. When the interstate enters the northern Playa, a road to a pre-War rest stop which has since become the ghoul town of Odyssey branches off on the right.
Traveling further north, another bridge crosses the Snake Bite Gulch of the arroyo that runs through the Pass. From there, the ruins of Rice Army Airfield can be seen buried in the sands to the right. In the far north towards Hesperia, the interstate ends at a gas station with the bridge beyond broken and radioactive sand dunes stretching as far as the eye can see.
