Exodites

The Exodites, also known as the Star Tribes or California Tribes, were a loose confederation of tribes descended from colonists that left Vault 18 to settle the Crestline Valley. By 2260, the only remaining Exodite tribe in the Pass is the California Tribe.

Background

In 2201, Vault 18's population was well over 1000; the vault was nearing capacity and fears of overpopulation caused consternation among the populace. Meanwhile, expeditions by the Wasteland Scouts made the prospect of entering the wasteland less mystifying and much more exciting to the vault's young residents, many of whom began planning for leaving the vault. Wasteland Scout Dr. Rogers spearheaded the new movement, even mapping out potential colonization spots and making assurances that the New California Republic would not infringe on their territory. To protect the vault from potential enemies, the movement's supporters began teaching their children a "Forgetting Game" to keep Vault 18's location secret.

The movement soon gained traction after increased activity along the San Andreas Fault led to fears of the vault caving in, with Rogers suggesting that their exodus happen sooner. Those who still refused to leave gave them the name "Exodites."

When the Exodites left the vault, they quickly dispersed and settled throughout the Pass, and even beyond, like the Ura Tribe which settled in San Bernardino.

The Star Player and many other young residents of Vault 18 are adopted children from these mysteriously vanished tribes.

Society

Despite their low timespan of existence, the tribes’ disregard of the advanced knowledge and technology of Vault 18, as well as their emphasis on forgetting, quickly led to significant illiteracy amongst the tribals (which is why a few of the tribes’ names are misspelled.)
